Osteoarthritis is a form of joint wear that often occurs in:
The fingers (finger joints)
The thumb (thumb base osteoarthritis or CMC-1 osteoarthritis)
The wrist joints
The symptoms usually develop gradually and are more common with aging, but overuse, previous injuries, or hereditary factors can also play a role.
Patients with osteoarthritis in the hand, thumb, or wrists often experience:
Pain when moving or putting stress on the hand
Stiffness, especially in the morning
Reduced grip strength
Swelling or thickening of the joints
Difficulty with gripping, turning, or fine motor skills
The pain can be intermittent and often worsens with prolonged use of the hands.
